Summerside Unveils New Fire Services Facility

Summerside Unveils Location and Construction Details of new $11 Million Fire Services Facility
Posted on 12/03/2024

SUMMERSIDE, PE The City of Summerside is proud of its commitment to public safety with the announcement of the location and details for tendering and construction of a new, state-of-the-art fire services facility. Unveiled today at a press conference by Mayor Dan Kutcher and the Summerside City Council at the current Station 1 Fire Hall, this $11 million investment represents a transformative step in strengthening fire safety and emergency response capabilities for the community. The new facility will include cutting-edge training areas, modern equipment storage, and enhanced operational spaces, ensuring our dedicated firefighters have the resources they need to continue their vital work.

The new facility located at Central Street adjacent to Leger Park, will replace Station 1 Fire Hall, which has served the community for over 60 years. This decision comes after careful study and consultation with volunteer members of the Summerside Fire Department, who have provided invaluable insights into the daily operational challenges the current facility faces.

Built in 1962, the existing Station 1 has outgrown its lifespan, leading to operational inefficiencies. The increased demands on fire services due to population growth, urban expansion, and evolving safety standards have further highlighted the need for a modern facility that meets current and future requirements.

"Today marks an exciting chapter for our community as we build on a new fire hall that will enhance the safety and well-being of every resident. It’s an investment in our present and future and a testament to the strength and resilience of our community. Together, we’re building a safer Summerside. " said Mayor Dan Kutcher.

Key features of the new fire hall include:

● Increased Capacity: The new facility will accommodate four fire trucks, compared to two at Station 2 in St. Eleanor's, and will include a decontamination bay for trucks, improved access to showers, and a fitness facility.

● Enhanced On-Site Membership Training: The new facility will provide state-of-the-art on-site training areas such as ladder repelling wall, ladder work plates, advancing hose lines, back parking lot hydrant, roof, and stairwell access for member training.

● Community Engagement: The fire department will continue to foster connections with the community through initiatives such as park BBQs, tours of the new facility, and other programming.

Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months, with project costs estimated at $11 million, including necessary furnishings and HST. The project is set to go to tender in fall 2025 with construction beginning in 2026.

"The new fire hall marks a significant step forward for the Summerside Fire Department. Our current station has served us well for over six decades, but the demands on modern fire services have evolved,” said Ron Enman, Fire Chief for the City of Summerside. “This new facility will provide our team with the space, tools, and resources to ensure the safety of our community.”

The City acknowledges that the new fire hall will be located near Leger Park and the Parkview Seniors Club. We are committed to ensuring minimal disruption during construction and maintaining open lines of communication with community members. Leger Park will remain operational throughout the project, and efforts will be made to preserve the park's natural beauty, including plans for tree replacement to mitigate any environmental impacts.
