Summerside Food Insecurity Policy Dialogue

The Summerside City Council recognizes that many residents are struggling with the high cost of food and is interested in exploring what the City may be able to do to help, within the budget resources and competing priorities of the City. The City currently assists with community garden program and has planning rules that allow for some forms of urban agriculture.

We’re looking to meaningfully involve residents, subject matter experts, community groups and other stakeholders in a dialogue to develop and recommended policies to address this pressing issue. The City recognizes that the federal and provincial governments and many community organizations have a role to play in addressing this issue, and invites all of these stakeholders to have a say in this Policy Dialogue.

To address this topic, the City of Summerside is partnering with Civonus Inc. to invite your participation in a multi-step, online consensus building process. This innovative process is designed to produce well thought out, evidence informed policy recommendations for the Summerside City Council to consider. About the CIVONUS Process

Civonus is an online web application and facilitated process that enables many citizens and stakeholders to work together to reach a consensus about policy options.

Civonus is for everyone. Any citizen or stakeholder who is affected by the topic being discussed is encouraged to participate. You don’t need to be a policy or topic expert.

Civonus is an ‘online asynchronous’ process. That means the online activity is not scheduled; you sign up, participate and contribute on your schedule. It also means you will not have to attend a town hall meeting, focus group or Zoom session.

Civonus is a facilitated and moderated process. That means a trained facilitator will closely monitor the discussion daily to protect your anonymity, provide a safe, inclusive space, and ensure a respectful ‘dialogue’.

Civonus is about consensus building. That means all participants are asked to listen to each other, learn about the topic, consider different perspectives and collectively build options that all can accept for consideration.

Civonus is about better policy making. That means that the process is designed to produce policy options which take into account the the environmental, economic and social consequences of policy options, the varying needs and abilities of citizens and stakeholders, and the available evidence.

The ultimate goal of the Civonus process is to arrive at one or more mutually acceptable policy options for City of Summerside to consider.
