City of Summerside Passes Resolution to Strengthen Local Economy Amid Potential U.S. Tariffs
Summerside, PEI — In response to the potential imposition of U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, the City of Summerside has passed a resolution supporting the Province of Prince Edward Island and the Government of Canada. The resolution outlines proactive measures to protect the local economy, reinforce trade resilience, and support Canadian industries and businesses.
Recognizing the strong economic, cultural, and social ties between Summerside, Prince Edward Island, and the United States, the City acknowledges that tariffs would pose significant economic challenges. These include disruptions to trade channels and supply chains, increased costs for consumers and businesses, and threats to economic stability.
Key Measures Adopted in the Resolution:
- Local and Canadian Procurement: The City will prioritize purchasing goods and services from local and Canadian vendors whenever practical to strengthen the regional economy and reduce dependency on U.S. goods.
- Ongoing Monitoring: The Finance Department will monitor procurement from U.S. sources and identify potential alternatives to ensure continued economic stability.
- Business Engagement: The City will collaborate with the Summerside Chamber of Commerce and local businesses to assess potential tariff impacts and communicate findings to provincial and federal partners.
- Policy Advocacy: The City will advocate for policies that support economic stability, equitable trade practices, and inter-provincial trade cooperation.
These initiatives demonstrate Summerside’s commitment to supporting the Province of Prince Edward Island, protecting local industries, and promoting mutually beneficial trade practices between Canada and the United States.
