City of Summerside Increases Tree Management Program Efforts
Posted on 08/08/2023

SUMMERSIDE, PE – The City of Summerside, like many other communities across Prince Edward Island, had their tree population significantly impacted by the detrimental effects of Hurricane Fiona in 2022. Since then, the City’s Community Services Department has been determined to replenish its streets, greenspaces and forestry and have planted upwards of five hundred trees thus far with more to be rooted. Additionally, Summerside has planned several programs to increase the growth of its tree inventory across the city including:

  • Rotary Friendship Park - Woodlot Tree Management Plan.
  • The 2 billion Tree initiative.
  • Street Tree Planting Program.
  • The Tiny Forest Initiative.
  • 400 - 1 Gallon Trees planted at Rotary Friendship Park

Additionally, the City of Summerside has engaged horticulturist Dave Carmichael to provide assistance to its greenspaces division in assessing its tree population and reviewing alternatives in diversifying its tree population following a huge loss in inventory.

“With current and forecasted changes to our climate, along with other environmental variables, it’s imperative we do not focus entirely on planting native species but diversify the plantation to non-native species as well." mentioned Trent Williams Parks and Greenspaces Manager for the City of Summerside. “We look forward to exploring all options for growth in this industry” continued Williams.

The City of Summerside remains committed to its reforestation efforts around the city and believes that these programs and initiatives create an excellent path towards the ever-growing valued forestry in and amongst our City.
