SUMMERSIDE, PE - Today, on the west-berth of the Port of Summerside on the picturesque waterfront, the City of Summerside announced the return of National sport body, Hockey Canada to its Community in 2025. The coveted Rivalry Series features the National Canadian Women’s Team and National U.S women’s team in a five-game competition featuring the two fierce rivals. This international sport tourism event will take place at Credit Union Place inside the Island Petroleum Energy Centre on Saturday, February 8th, 2025. The City will host game five of the series.

“Hosting a game of the 2025 Hockey Canada Rivalry Series at Credit Union Place is a tremendous honor for the City of Summerside. This event underscores our city's dedication to celebrating sports and bringing together our vibrant community. We look forward to welcoming fans from near and far to experience top-tier hockey and the warm hospitality Summerside is known for. This is not just a game; it's a testament to our commitment to fostering athletic excellence and community spirit. We can't wait to share this thrilling experience with everyone next February,” said City of Summerside Mayor Dan Kutcher.

This upcoming Hockey season’s Rivalry Series will feature three games in the U.S (San Jose, California, Salt Lake City, Utah and Boise, Idaho) with the remaining two games being played in Canada (Halifax, NS and Summerside, PE). Summerside will host the only weekend game in Canada as part of the series.

“Halifax and Summerside have proven to be successful international hockey hosts, and we know both communities will embrace the opportunity to welcome and cheer on the best players from Canada and the United States as they compete in the Rivalry Series in February 2025,” said D’Arcy Hutcheson, director of events with Hockey Canada. “The Rivalry Series has become a fan-favourite event on the international hockey calendar, and the teams will enjoy facing off in front of passionate hockey fans in two great Canadian communities.”

Provincial Minister of Fisheries, Tourism, Sport and Culture, Cory Deagle added, "The Province of Prince Edward Island is thrilled to partner with the City of Summerside in hosting a game of the 2025 Hockey Canada Rivalry Series at Credit Union Place. This event is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our province's passion for sports, our rich cultural heritage, and our renowned hospitality. We are proud to support this prestigious series and look forward to welcoming hockey fans from across the country. Together, we will create an unforgettable experience that highlights the very best of PEI. See you all in February for what promises to be an electrifying game!"

The long-standing rivalry between Canada and the United States women’s teams has produced some exciting entertainment over the years. Canada and the United States have faced each other in the gold medal game of six of seven Olympics, 22 of 23 IIHF Women's World Championships and 21 of 23 4 Nations Cups since the beginning of international play. Only a few of Canada's and the U.S.'s losses have been to teams outside their rivalry. Canada currently leads the head-to-head with 103 Canadian wins versus 78 American wins. Canada also leads in Gold medals with 31 vs 21 for the Americans.
