FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SUMMERSIDE, PE (May 19, 2020) - In 2013, Summerside City Council established an Age Friendly Committee that was tasked to uncover the City’s opportunities relating to the World Health Organization’s Age Friendly network. Also supporting the City’s senior population is the East Prince Seniors Initiative (EPSI) as well as the Parkview Seniors Club that have both worked diligently towards a continued age-friendly future for Summerside.

Over the past several years, both the Age Friendly Committee and EPSI have done fantastic work, research, outreach, programming and community engagement supporting the lives of seniors throughout the City of Summerside.

With the recent announcement by EPSI’s board of directors that the group would be demobilizing, Summerside City Council now see this as an opportune time to redefine and build upon the City’s efforts in supporting seniors. To that end, Summerside City Council has directed senior staff to develop a new draft terms of reference for a proposed task force which would enhance the City’s efforts in supporting the senior community in Summerside.

“We would like to sincerely thank the Age Friendly Committee and EPSI for their efforts over the last number of years. Summerside has seen plenty of progress and improvements for the lives of seniors in our great City,” mentioned Mayor Basil Stewart of the City of Summerside. “The City would like to commend both organizations for their contributions and setting the stage for the next phase in the City’s ongoing efforts to support our seniors,” added Mayor Stewart.

The draft terms of reference for a new senior-focused task force is set to be presented to City Council later this summer or early fall. The City looks forward to working with all seniors groups in the community to provide input on the terms of reference.
