Park improvements coming to five parks in Summerside

SUMMERSIDE, PE (September 3, 2019) – In the coming weeks, residents will see improvements being made to a number of parks across the City of Summerside.

The Community Services Department has begun to receive shipments of this year’s playground equipment that was approved and tendered as part of the 2019 capital budget.

Five city parks will see old playground equipment being removed and replaced with newer and more modern structures.

The most sizeable investment project this year will take place at the Lefurgey Park, where in addition to the new play structures, an asphalt surface for road hockey and basketball will be added, along with parking and improved signage.

“It’s great to see the new structures arriving. Our department crews will begin the installations as soon as the very long list of summer tasks and projects are complete,” commented JP Desrosiers, Director of Community Services. “Our City is blessed with over 200 acres of park land with 19 parks, 14 of which are play parks and within that our inventory of playground equipment includes over 100 individual structures. Ensuring that each structure is regularly inspected, repaired and replaced when needed is a top priority for our Park division,” added Desrosiers.

“The City is investing $170,000 this year in playground and park improvements as part of its annual capital budget with the work expected to be completed by the end of October,” commented the City’s Chair of Community Services, Councilor Cory Snow. “The ongoing investment in parks, greenspaces and recreation within our city is an example of our commitment to a healthy and active community,” added Snow.

City parks that will see new equipment will include Fairview Park, Centennial Park, Maplewood Heights Park, Lefurgey Park and Crescent Drive Park.

Park crews ask that while parks are under repair that residents avoid those areas to ensure the safety of all users.
