City of Summerside to launch a new Seniors Advisory Committee

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SUMMERSIDE, PE (April 29, 2021) – The City of Summerside is pleased to announce the launch of a new Seniors Advisory Committee of which will conduct research, outreach and community engagement to support the lives of seniors in Summerside.

Last year, EPSI’s board of directors announced that the group would be demobilizing. The City of Summerside’s Mayor and Council saw this as an opportune time to redefine and build upon the City’s efforts in supporting its seniors. The new committee of five will work to expand on the initiatives and programs previously conducted by the Age Friendly Committee and East Prince Seniors Initiative (EPSI).

“The City’s senior population plays a pivotal role within our community and we’re extremely grateful for the work conducted by the Age Friendly Committee and EPSI,” commented Councillor Cory Snow, Chair of the Seniors Advisory Committee. “Over the years, Summerside has seen plenty of progress and improvement for the lives of seniors in our great City, and the new committee looks forward to building off of these successes.”

The mandate of the committee is to advise on related municipal aspects of the provision of senior services and programming in the City of Summerside, and to develop a framework whereby the committee can survey, engage and support communications on related municipal seniors programming wants and needs.

Committee members will include:

  • Joan Lefurgey, Summerside Resident
  • Dr. Katriena McKay, Provincial Geriatric Program Physician & Summerside Resident
  • Mayor Basil Stewart
  • Councillor Cory Snow, Chair of the Seniors Advisory Committee
  • Councillor Carrie Adams

Roles of each will be determined following the initial meeting in June.

The committee is excited to get underway and looks forward to working with the City’s senior population.
