Active transportation route to connect Summerside

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SUMMERSIDE, PE (September 18, 2020) – Summerside continues its commitment to being a leader in green initiatives and sustainability. Today’s announcement of a $1 million active transportation route connecting the north end of the City to the south is yet another example of this commitment.

“This will be a welcomed addition to an area of Summerside that already features infrastructure with a focus on renewable energy,” commented Mayor Basil Stewart. “With construction of the eco business park well underway, the existing electric vehicle charging stations and solar farm on-site at Credit Union Place, the addition of a year-round multipurpose training facility and development of Summerside’s newest hotel  facility, Greenwood Drive is becoming a hub for development and sustainability in our City.”

The investment announced today in relation to Active Transportation will provide residents with a safe, healthy and sustainable method of travel in Summerside connecting some key areas of the city to key recreation and leisure infrastructure.

“Active transportation plays an important role in enhancing community health, safety and livability amongst residents,” mentioned JP Desrosiers, Director of Community Services. “Improvements to active transportation combined with accessibility to existing infrastructure is a priority for Summerside and such improvements can create increased active and healthy population, save residents money and reduce green house gas emissions,” added Desrosiers.

The active transportation lane will now safely connect residents to Historic Downtown Summerside, Summerside waterfront and the boardwalk, not to mention the Credit Union Place, by way of a two lane shared cycling and active transportation route commencing on at the Pope Road intersection ending at Credit Union Place.

“The Active Transportation Fund was established to help safely increase physical activity and enhance the connectivity of our communities while reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” said Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Steven Myers. “Summerside continues to be a great partner as we work towards a more sustainable future for our Island.”

Construction for the active transportation route is already underway with a completion date expected in October.
