Train to Save Lives

Credit Union Place offers training for experienced swimmers to become lifeguards through its Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and National Lifeguard programs.

  • Bronze Star: A 10–12 hour course that prepares swimmers for the Bronze Medallion. Participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills individually and in partners. Candidates learn CPR and develop the lifesaving skills needed to be their own lifeguard. Includes a timed 400m swim. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Cost: $125.00 + HST

  • Bronze Medallion (Step 1 of 3 to become a certified lifeguard): A five-week course that teaches the understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water: 1. rescue education, 2. judgement, 3. knowledge, and 4. skill and fitness. Participants learn tows, carries, and defense methods in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Minimum age is 13 years.

Cost: $200.00 + HST

  • Bronze Cross (Step 2 of 3 to become a certified lifeguard): A five-week course designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs, including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification. Minimum age is 14 years.

Cost: $200.00 + HST

  • Combo Course: Participants who have prerequisites for Bronze Medallion (13+ or Bronze Star) are able to take a combo course that gives them all 3 certifications (Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid) at the end of the course hours.

Cost: $375.00 + HST

  • National Lifeguard (NLS) (Step 3 of 3 to become a certified lifeguard): An intense 40-hour training course open to persons 16 years of age and older. This course incorporates fitness skills, communication, first aid, spinals, scanning, learning all aspects of pool safety, and lifeguarding. Candidates must have a valid Standard First Aid Certificate, which is offered at this facility, prior to the beginning of the course.

Cost: $300.00 +HST.  

  • Standard First Aid: is a prerequisite for Bronze Cross and NLS (need not be current).   Standard First Aid for provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Standard First Aid incorporates all of Emergency First Aid and is designed for those who require a more in-depth understanding of first aid including: legal implications of first aid treatment, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, chest injuries, and medical emergencies. Includes CPR-C certification.

Cost: $100.00 + HST

  • Assistant Instructor Course: Through classroom learning and in-water practice, the Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor course prepares candidates to help instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching while they master basic progressions. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants are emphasized. 

Cost: $100.00 + HST

  • Swim Instructor Course: The Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate the swimming strokes and related skills found in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program. Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, planning skills, and a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques.

Cost: $100.00+ HST
