SUMMERSIDE, PE - The City of Summerside has released its 2025-26 budget, emphasizing strategic investments in infrastructure while maintaining financial responsibility. Under the theme "Planning for Growth," the budget prioritizes essential services, economic development, and long-term sustainability amid rising costs and economic uncertainty.
With a balanced budget in place, property tax rates will remain unchanged, reflecting the City's commitment to fiscal responsibility while continuing to advocate for increased municipal funding from provincial and federal partners. A significant $29.1 million investment in infrastructure will enhance key areas, including $11 million for east-west corridor development, $3.7 million for water system upgrades, $3 million for sewer improvements, and $1.4 million for street resurfacing. Public safety remains a focus, with $404,000 allocated for fire and police equipment upgrades, while $130,000 is dedicated to downtown revitalization and public art initiatives.
A key highlight of this year’s budget is the City’s continued reinvestment in its electric utility, a source of great pride for the community. Summerside Electric will receive $4.6 million to enhance safety, security, and reliability, ensuring a sustainable and dependable power supply for residents and businesses. With an estimated $3.5 million in annual infrastructure replacements and upgrades needed over the next decade, this investment is critical to maintaining the City's long-term energy infrastructure. The resident-owned utility plays a vital role in supporting municipal programs and services while demonstrating environmental leadership in the fight against climate change. Its financial contributions have allowed Summerside to maintain stable property tax rates since 1995 and invest in key community assets such as the boardwalk and Credit Union Place, directly benefiting taxpayers and enhancing quality of life. The City will also continue to rate match with those approved by the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC) for Maritime Electric.
The budget is supported by key revenue sources, including $12.7 million from government transfers, $12.1 million from property taxes, and $3.7 million from wind-energy sales, ensuring stable financial planning.
Mayor and Council reaffirm their commitment to responsible governance, infrastructure improvements, and fostering a resilient and thriving community while maintaining the services that make Summerside a great place to live, work, and invest.
