City of Summerside unveils vision for Downtown Waterfront Transformation Project
Posted on 06/17/2024

SUMMERSIDE, PE - The City of Summerside is excited to announce the launch of the vision for its Downtown Waterfront Transformation project, a comprehensive initiative aimed at transforming our downtown waterfront area. This ambitious project is designed to reimagine and invigorate Summerside's urban core, making it a vibrant, welcoming space for residents and visitors alike.

Drawing on the city's unique history, natural resources, and cultural diversity, the transformation project will focus on creating a downtown that is accessible, visually appealing, and bustling with activities. The initiative underscores the importance of a cohesive and connected downtown, where the historic downtown, waterfront boardwalk, and port lands seamlessly integrate into a single, dynamic region.

Mayor Dan Kutcher expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Summerside's downtown has always been the heart of our community. This transformation project is a bold step towards ensuring our downtown continues to be a place where people want to live, work, and play. It's about honoring our past while paving the way for a brighter future."

To achieve this vision, the Downtown Waterfront Committee has been established, comprising of three specialized teams: the Small Business Activation Team, the Transforming our Built Environment Team, and the Special Projects Team. Each team will focus on specific aspects of the transformation effort, from attracting and retaining small businesses to enhancing public spaces and identifying key capital projects.

Deputy Mayor and Committee Chair Cory Snow emphasized the importance of community involvement, saying, "This project is a true collaboration between the city, local organizations, and our residents. By bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise, we can create a downtown that is not only beautiful and functional but also a source of pride for everyone in Summerside."

Rose Dennis, Executive Director of Explore / Downtown Summerside, highlighted the project's collaborative nature, saying, "This initiative is a community effort. By working together with local businesses, organizations, and residents, we can create a downtown that truly reflects the spirit of Summerside. The transformation will not only boost our economy but also foster a sense of pride and belonging among our citizens."

The committee's mandate includes delivering recommendations by Spring 2025, which will inform a comprehensive Downtown Waterfront Transformation Plan. The process will involve extensive public engagement to ensure the community's input is integral to the project's success.

Summerside is at a pivotal moment. Recent developments and the dedication of entrepreneurs, developers, and policy makers have set the stage for this transformative journey. The vision for the City’s Downtown Transformation project aims to capitalize on this momentum, creating a downtown that is more fun, accessible, and engaging for everyone.
